”Don’t Even Think It!”

Have you ever said that or heard someone say that? Usually it is said when an inconvenient thought logically arises, but you don’t want to talk of it for its unpleasantness. Sometimes you might say, “Forget what you are thinking.” They are expressions that highlight the fact that what you think determines what you may say or do.

Solomon wisely directs,Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter”(Ecclesiastes10:20).Thoughts as knowledge have consequences. The fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil” was first contemplated by Eve before she did eat and sin (Genesis 3:1-24). What awful consequences followed!

Haman mulled in his mind the wrong he supposed in Mordecai. His scornful thoughts left him swinging on the gallows! (Esther 3:5,6; 8:7). Some people never get over another’s sins! The elder brother couldn’t enjoy the abundance of has father’s house for his bitter thoughts (Luke 15:24-32).

If you would have a pleasant, happy life – yea a life of abundance you must think and act on wholesome things (Philippians 4:8,9; John 10:10). Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Sin follows incorrect, lustful thinking (James 1:14,15). Apostasy comes from evil or corrupted hearts (Hebrew 3:12; Colossians 2:20-23; Matthew 15:8,9). So much of what is presented in media is incorrect whether it relate to immoral sexual behavior, violence or anger. (Mark 7:20-23). Angry thoughts lead to angry and hurtful words and deeds. (Proverbs 14:17; 29:22). It may be unavoidable to be angry at times, but it is a sin to be obsessed and possessed of anger. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Do you want to not gossip? Then don’t even think of what you shouldn’t ever say! But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” (Romans 13:14).

Do you want to have happiness despite sadness and evil in the world? Then don’t dwell on your cares. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.(Matthew 6:34).In fact, God invites you to cast your cares on Him (1Peter 5:7). Once placed on your Lord, isn’t it foolish to take those back and try to carry them again!?

So what should you think? You can focus on the things that bless and lead to wholesomeness. You know, “Count your many blessing”. “Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely” (Psalm 147:1). These should be your heart’s desire anyway and will bring delight to your mind. HJS

O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?”(Jeremiah 4:14).
